Understanding the Elements and How it Affects Boating

You can not control the weather, but you can be prepared.

When boating it is possible to get caught unexpectedly in bad weather, encounter insects or spend too much time in the sun. To protect yourself and your passengers, do some research before you head out.

Here are some guidelines:

1. Check local weather conditions and plan accordingly.

2. Have a VHF radio on board to receive weather updates while you’re out.

3. Keep an eye on the clouds – for more information see Discover Boatings Weather 101 – watch out for Cumulonimbus clouds which can show the sign of a storm coming.

4. Keep track of tides if you are in an area affected by them and know when water levels will be low or high.

5. Have protective gear on board.

6. Wear polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes from the glare of the sun. This will also help you to see below the surface of the water.

7. Watch out for sunburn. Lightweight and light-colored clothing reflects the sun and is cooler than dark clothing.

8. Wear sunscreen of SPF 15 or more on all exposed skin.

9. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

10. Carry bug repellent on board. Especially useful around dusk when mosquitoes start coming out.
