Watersports Safety

From waterskiing to wakeboarding and even tubing, people of all ages love watersports. It’s a great way to spend time with your friends and family, and get your adrenaline pumping. While watersports are a thrilling way to pass the time, safety should always be your priority.

Properly using the equipment that your Legend Boat comes equipped with is a great starting point. We’re going to cover how to use your ski tow bar, ski pylon, and aft rings.

General Safety Tips

While these safety tips should almost always be applied to any time you spend on the water, they’re especially important when you’re taking part in watersports.

Always Wear Life Jackets – while nobody plans on wiping out or falling into the water, that can be an inevitable part of watersports. Wearing a life jacket that fits, and is suitable for the activity you’re participating in will make all the difference.

Know the Water Conditions – checking the forecast before you head out on the water is a habit that you should always get into, regardless of whether you’re fishing, relaxing, or participating in watersports. It’s important that the weather is adequate for the activities you have planned.

Designate a Spotter – keeping an eye on the people who are participating in the watersports is crucial for a safe return at the end of the day.

Stay Sober – boating and alcohol don’t mix, it’s the law. But mixing alcohol with motorsports is a recipe for injuries.

Read Manufacturer’s Guidelines – your equipment will come with manufacturer’s guidelines.

The Role of Equipment in Safety

Using the correct equipment is a crucial step in watersports safety. This includes everything down to using the correct tow ropes as they’re intended to be used. This is because

Check and Maintain your Gear

From your PFDs to your tow ropes, inspecting your gear before every outing is a crucial step in ensuring you have a fun and safe day on the water.

When purchasing a PFD, there is a quick in-store test that you can do to ensure it fits. Simply put the PFD on, and lift your hands above your head. Now move around and look over each shoulder. While doing each of these movements, the PFD should not move. If your PFD stays put, that means it fits!

Before heading out on the water, ensure that your tow ropes d not have any knots, frayed edges, or sun damage. These can all weaken the ropes, creating an unsafe situation. Check the manufacturer’s guidelines and ensure you are attaching your rope to the specified points on your boat.

When getting your tube ready to go, ensure there are no air leaks. Even small leaks can pose a threat to the safety of your tuber.

Give your water skis and wakeboard a quick check-over too, to ensure everything looks as it should.

Follow Manufacturer Guidelines

Manufacturer guidelines will have all of the information you need to safely set up your watersports equipment. Ensure you are following all of their recommendations, so you can maximize your fun on the water!

Using the Correct Equipment

Did you know that your boat’s ski pylon, ski tow bar, and aft rings all serve different purposes?

Aft rings are to be used for towing a tube. Ski pylons and ski tow bars are intended for other watersports like water skiing and wakeboarding. Using the correct features for your chosen watersport is critical for safety as well as preventing damage to your hull.
