What's in your first aid kit?

Who wants to think of having an accident while boating? We sure don’t. But the reality is, there’s always the possibility it can happen. It’s important to be prepared and have a well-equipped first aid kit on board. You may be thinking that bringing along that first aid kit from home or the one you keep in the car might do. But remember, your boat’s first aid kit should be stocked with items that are for more serious injuries. We recommend you have the following:

  • antiseptic
  • topical anesthetic wipes
  • waterproof adhesive bandages
  • butterfly bandages to close open wounds
  • bandages to wrap sprained ankles or wrists
  • gauze sponges
  • medical adhesive tape
  • pieces of splint material to stabilize suspected broken bones
  • motion-sickness bags
  • cold and pain reliever medications
  • blunt-tipped bandage scissors
  • tweezers
  • flashlight

Make sure your boat’s first aid kit includes an easy-to-understand first aid instruction booklet. Keep your first aid kit in a tight waterproof container or bag. It would also be wise to enrol for first aid and CPR training, just in case the unimaginable were to happen.
