Guide to wakeboarding

Are you ready to try some wakeboarding behind your boat?. You need to tow the rider behind the boat at a speed of around 30-40km (18-25mph).

When choosing a wakeboard to ride behind a boat, the size of the board should be based on a person’s weight and skill level rather than their height.

This is a basic chart based on weight:

Rider Weight (Lbs) Suitable Wakeboard Length

Less than 100 <51 in / 130 cm

90 – 130 51 in / 130 cm

130 – 180 53 – 55 in / 135 – 139 cm

170 – 250 55 – 57 in / 140 -144 cm

200 – 275+ 57+ in / 144+ cm

The advantages of having a larger board are that they can be easier for beginners as they are more floaty. Larger boards are easier to get up and stay up on, however they are heavier and harder to maneuver in the water.

Smaller boards can be good for more advanced riders as they are better for tricks however they are less stable and it can take a bit of practice to land tricks at the beginning compared to a bigger board.

For best results it is good to have a wakeboard tower, normally constructed of thick-walled stainless steel or aluminum tubing, which places the “pull point” about 2 metres (7 ft) off the water’s surface. The high tow point makes it easier to jump and get air as the rope is not pulling downward as when it is attached to the low tow point used for skiing.

Make sure to always have a spotter in the boat when you are towing someone. They are there to communicate to the driver if the people behind the boat fall into the water and need to be retrieved. They can also communicate if the person being towed would like to slow down.

Never tow anyone behind your boat when visibility is poor at night and make sure the person being towed always wears a lifejacket.
