Georgian Bay – Canada Day Weekend

Hey Everyone,

What an amazing long weekend. The sun was shining, the wind was keeping us cool and the fish were on fire! My first tournament of the year will be on Georgian bay July 7, hosted by the CSFL (Competitive Sport Fishing League) out of Penetang harbour, ON.

I have been fishing Georgian Bay for about 3 years now and I’m finally starting to figure this lake out. I use to only catch a bass here and there. But recently, I’ve been able to develop a pattern for smallmouth bass. I’ve concentrated my fishing to shallow areas that the bass would be feeding in. These areas are typically more of a sandy bottom with deeper weed edges nearby.

One of the most important clues that I have notice on this lake is to match the hatch. It’s so important to mimic what the bass are feeding on. Minnows and crayfish seem to be the main forage on this lake. It’s important to keep in mind the time of the year, it dictates the size of the bait fish. So I have opt to use 3″ minnows/crawfish and no bigger than 4″ worms.

My typical search bait for Bass is a Jerk Bait or Spinner bait. One of my favourite Jerk baits is the Rapala XR-10 X-Rap. I’m able to cast this lure a mile. It’s an excellent lure to fan cast the area and eliminate water quickly. When I come to an area that I have caught a couple of fish or see follows. I will slow down my technique with a worm or minnow imitation. This will usually trigger the fish into a hunger strike oppose to a jerk bait bite which is a reaction strike.

The end result of my practice on Georgian Bay a week before the tournament. Has left me with confidence that I will do well in this tournament.

Stay tuned as I blog about my tournament on Georgian Bay.
