Boating and Fishing by Dams

Be careful that you do not go boating, fishing or swimming in areas close to hydroelectric dams, as areas that seem calm and safe one moment can suddenly have a rising and surging of water the next.

Operators of a Hydroelectric facility can be several kilometers away from the dam and therefore can not see you. They can open and close dams to control river flow and can start and stop the generators as and when electric demand rises and falls.

Obey all warning signs and never anchor or tie your boat under a dam as rapidly changing water levels can swamp your boat or pull you into an underflow.

When boating, fishing or swimming in a river keep checking upstream for changes in water levels and currents. If the water level is rising or the flow is speeding up get out of the water or move your boat downstream.
